In this Meet the Team Member post, we get to know the newest IFA to join the team at Bigmore Financial Planning, Gretchen Nichols.
Gretchen has been with Bigmores for 8 months, working as a financial adviser. She brings with her years in the industry, and a knowledge of the entire process of designing and executing a financial plan. With a true passion for helping people reach their financial goals so they can live their best life, Gretchen supports her clients through all stages of life.
She is also an avid dog lover, with two West Highland Terriers, Rosie and Sterling. Occasionally, she treats the office to a visit from them which brings a burst of energy and a great deal of joy to the building.
How did you end up working in your respective field?
I worked in another IFA firm for 11 years before coming to Bigmores. I started in the admin role as I also worked as Office Manager, trained up other employees, and then took my exams and did a bit of paraplanning before advising clients so, I am familiar with the whole process of Financial Planning.
What do you love about your job?
What I love most about Financial Planning is my interaction with clients. I enjoy helping people achieve their goals, making sense of their portfolios and providing them with a plan that allows them to enjoy their life before and during retirement. It often feels like sitting down and talking with friends as I get to know my clients and their families quite well, which is rewarding.
What is the biggest misconception people have about your job?
I think a lot of people think that Financial Advisers are only interested in making money and that anyone could do our job without much training. This could not be farther from the truth as our main goal is to help people solve problems and achieve their long-term goals, even if they are starting out with a smaller amount. Many people do not understand the importance of the maintenance of a portfolio and the benefits of having an Independent Financial Adviser who has access to the whole of market versus a tied adviser who could only recommend their own company’s products and funds. The difference could affect investment risk. Just as we rely on healthcare professionals or car mechanics, for maintenance of our health or cars, our finances will benefit from professionals in Financial Services.
What is the best part about working at Bigmore Associates?
Bigmore Associates is a relaxed and friendly work environment, and I have been warmly welcomed by all of my colleagues. I am pleased to work with highly skilled professionals in various fields and that I am able to recommend them to my clients for additional services that they may require such as Protection, Mortgages, Wills and Probate, Trusts and Employee Benefits.
Any favourite local spots of businesses in Walton or Bromley you can recommend?
I do not live in Walton, where our office is located however, I enjoy walking along the river there when the weather allows, as well as the High Street. Walton offers a variety of shops, pubs, and many restaurants for a variety of lunch or dinner options every day.
I live in southeast London in the borough of Bromley which is conveniently located between Central London and the Kent countryside. There are two train stations which allow access to all London stations within a minimum journey of 15 minutes on the fast train. Bromley is a traditional market town which hosts a bustling market every weekend. We also have a large modern shopping mall, pedestrianised High Street, large theatre with regular shows, great pubs and restaurants and several large parks where I enjoy taking my West Highland Terriers to run.
What about a favourite or funny work memory?
There are many funny moments at work which may only be funny to those working together however, I really like the fact that our office is dog-friendly, and we take turns bringing our dogs to the office on occasion. I think everyone enjoys when a dog walks up to their desk for a cuddle, and dogs are always doing funny things to make us smile.
What do you think is the most important part of employee wellbeing?
I like that we are encouraged to move, stretch and take breaks from the computer at Bigmores. There are often Wellness webinars and times taken out of the day for stretching and improved health activities.
What do you do to maintain your wellbeing on busy days?
I always make sure to take a walk outside at lunchtime. I also make a point to get up from my desk several times during the day for a hot drink or other tasks that require a short walk.
If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
If I could choose a superpower, it would be to make dreams come true.
